International Code Flags.
Code Flags have been used since the sixteenth century as a means of communications from ship to ship or from the ship to the shore. The development of code signals started as a simple comunications system in the Navy, to instruct ships of the line in battle.
The first recorded use of flags as a means of communiaction in a sea battle was about 480 BC, In a nautical battle between the Greeks and the Persians.
In the early days, the Admiral of the fleet, would raise a flag on his ship to indicated to the Captains of the other ships that he required a conference. Thus the Admilal's ship became known as the Flag Ship, an expression still used today.
